I’m excited to share my passion for professional nursing practice with you. I am an RN embarking on my BSN journey. Although I am only a few weeks into my BSN program, I have gained a new perspective on what it means to be a BSN-prepared nurse.

Foundations of Practice
Nursing is a complex profession that is ever-evolving to meet the needs of patients. The profession has seen many changes due to advancements in medical knowledge, the application of technology, and the expansion of settings for healthcare delivery. Regardless of these changes, the foundations of nursing practice remain the same. BSN-prepared nurses utilize these foundations of practice and apply them in creative ways to promote innovation and expertise across the nursing profession.
Critical Thinking
Caring for humans means that no two situations are identical. A clear goal can be defined as a desired outcome, but the means of achieving that goal will vary drastically. Nurses use critical thinking to connect the dots throughout the dynamics of human health and wellness needs.
Evidence-Based Practice
Nurses are problem solvers and life-long learners because the needs of patients are constantly changing. Nurses use evidence-based practice, the application of scientific evidence, to guide the plan of care to best suit the unique needs of patients.
Holistic Care
Human health and wellness extend far beyond the physical body. Patients are complex and unique with different dreams, capabilities, and circumstances. Nurses look at the whole picture when providing care to meet the physical, mental, and emotional needs of patients.
The art of empathetic care
Nursing is balancing the ‘what’ with the ‘how.’ The science of nursing practice guides the interventions provided to patients, but the art of nursing guides the nuance and equity of care provided. Nurses use empathy to connect with patients, understand their perspectives, and collaborate on a plan of care that meets their needs. From the perspective of empathy, nurses advocate for the care and resources they need to provide equity of care. BSN-prepared nurses use their leadership skills and knowledge of healthcare systems to navigate patients through their journey of health and wellness.
The science of innovative practice
Nursing is rooted in innovation using creativity, critical thinking, and evidence-based practice to deliver care across a dynamic environment. Advances in medical research and modern technology make healthcare delivery more complex and versatile than ever before. Nurses are experts in physical body systems, disease states, and implications of pharmacologic, medical, and surgical interventions. As medical knowledge expands, the capabilities of nursing practice and application expand. BSN-prepared nurses play a crucial role in promoting innovation in nursing practice through research, leadership, and influence across healthcare. Innovation in nursing practice is necessary to meet the evolving needs of healthcare today.
